The 2020 "Social Distanced" Patio
St. Louis Park Front Yard
Utilizing an unused driveway in front of an additional garage, this patio has a unique finish with larger scale wet finish pavers, large scale planters that we design and built and a custom designed trellis set behind a raingarden and a mix of native and Field-grown hardy perennials, including an edible cherry tree.

Landscape Key Elements - What's Unique in this Design
Trellis
This is a Field original design that goes with many house styles from mid-century to arts-and-crafts to suburban-comfy. Trellises do a great job of separating spaces without feeling like a wall.
Cor-Ten Planters
Field does our own metal work– these 8′ x 2′ planters are a favorite, getting your garden bed away from the furry long-eared creatures and making it easier on your back. Plus they look great in the space.
Plant Communities
A mix of native and Field-grown hardy perennials — our plant combinations are designed to knit-together over time – snuffing out weeds, lowering maintenance and providing season long interest (even in winter)
Edible Trees
The small tree with the watering bag is an edible cherry, a great edible landscaping tree.
Larger Scale Paver
Larger scale paver with “wet finish” really popular – this one is from County Materials – called Elements
Raingarden
Raingardens are great for front yards where yard-real estate is less precious and there is often great sun — don’t forget trees in your raingarden design!
Social-Distancing
Social-distancing front patio to be able to communicate with neighbors, watch kids play etc..
Stone Edging
Everyone is tired of their plastic edging coming up, getting hit by the lawn mower etc.. stone edging is a little more expensive but looks great, is easier to mow over and is really easy to fix/adjust over time.
What Our Customer Says...
“Our new front yard has been fantastic. Previously we had a super-wide driveway that made our front yard look like a parking lot. Now we have a usable patio space and beautiful plantings! Because of the pandemic, it was the perfect time to have more outdoor space. Our kids dubbed the patio our “Ice Cream Plaza.” Every night this past summer we ate ice cream on the patio while waving to our neighbors. We also used the patio as a safe space to visit with grandparents. We even got a projector and watched movies and football games outside!
The planters yielded an amazing crop. The deepness and warmth of the steel planters created an excellent environment for our tomatoes and peppers. We have never so many tomatoes and they kept coming into early October!
The plantings were so beautiful – everyone walking by wanted to know more about the salvias. The hyssop, butterfly weed, and alliums attracted bees and butterflies. In the early summer we ate a few cherries. The rain garden worked perfectly – collecting a significant amount of water. We used the trellis to grow hops and even had a small crop this first year! It was so cool to watch it grow. Over the fall and even now in winter, the grasses give more interest and grace to our front yard.
We could not be more pleased – Field has created such a wonderful space; it’s hard to remember what the space was like before. The installation was very quick and everyone was very professional. Thank you so much!”
