Landscape Elements For Your Next Project

Patios – Pavers, Flagstone, Poured Concrete and Gravel

The foundation of many landscape jobs is a patio and/or walkway. Over the years we have zero’d in on materials that work for our clients in the eclectic architectural setting of our service area. The bulk of our installation are completed with either clay paver, bluestone (both irregular and cut-and-patterned) or large-format concrete pavers. Sometimes poured concrete is the best option to meet a budget and we have partnered with Harold Pietig and Sons concrete for over 15 years. And gravel is used in many of our projects as a informal seating area or firepit setting.

    Low-Maintenance Plants

The backbone of Field’s plant designs include “best of class” plants that work well in urban yards. For the most part they come up early, have a thick leafy canopy that looks good all year long and have a great consistent shape. Divided into sun and shade groupings these are plants we often custom grow through our unique relationship with Wilson’s Nursery and are offered at our plant sale each June.

    Fence & Trellises

Fences are a common part of our projects. For the most part, we partner with Dakota Unlimited for fences construction and include it in our design. For smaller projects our Field StudioTeam can do the job. Here are some fences we’ve completed, including Lincoln picket, hog fence, california chain-link and horizontal board.

    Steps, Stairs and Stoops

Stairs are part of many of our designs, whether it is the stairs that are part of your front walkway leading from the sidewalk or your front stoop or more informal stairs in the garden. Each application has a preferred solution – with concrete being preferred for public stairs and “outcrop stone” for less formal solutions. Stoops and entry decks can either be completed in poured concrete or in wood, with design being the key difference between “replacing” and making something you love.

    Pergolas, Arbors and Wood Structures

We’ve been doing landscape carpentry as part of our installation projects since we started in 2005. Called FieldStudio, our in house team does custom arbors, pergolas, trellises and planters to make your living space complete.

    Walls and Rock work

Part of the Field DNA – we love rocks. We use superior trap as our “go to” rock material for walls and outcrops and gives that “Field look”. We also are fond of limestone, unique glacial boulders, granite outcrop and whatever else you find interesting at the local rockyard!

    Walkways

Similar to stairs, walkways range from the formal and public to informal. For front walks we often recommend poured concrete for its predictability. But in the back we love integrating the walkway with the patio material and other throughways we think flagstone steppers are just fine!
