    why Kerplantz?

Welcome to Kerplantz, the plant focused extension of the Field family of services. We believe that planting plants is one of the most important things you can do for our planet. If we could take 10% of the lawn areas and make it manageable and dense, we would make a huge difference in our world.

Why Choose Kerplantz? Our Kerplantz philosophy of creating manageable, dense plantings is built on the strategies and experiences of our two decades design and installation work at Field. Our curated plant palette allows us to create a cohesive, long-term, and structural plant design that feels like it was “born there”. With Kerplantz, it is possible to create spaces that look put together and still allow for a unique and personal flair.

    Reimagining Spaces with Purpose

Whether it is a small yard update, post construction, or major remodel, with Kerplantz we can create distinctive, long-term natural plantings that provide structure, consistent style, and wildlife value.

    Kerplantz  Strategies

    • Tree Islands and Berms

Trees make landscapes! The right tree in the right place surrounded by the right plants and rockwork just FEELS natural and right!

Tree islands and berms are one of the key strategies of creating a long term, natural environment surrounding a home. Trees anchor the planting area followed by swaths of shrubs and grasses, and ornamental rockwork. Tree islands should be low maintenance with a focus on structural plants but also provide great habitat for birds and pollinators. These areas offer year round structure – even in winter.

    • Meadows & Seeded Lawns

In any planting plan, the question of “how much lawn” is common. Lawns are crucial but there are choices and options.

In a Kerplantz planting plan, the lawn space is important but how you plan to use the space leads to different options. Seed mixes are great for areas with foot traffic. Traditional Kentucy bluegrass is still the best option for high foot traffic areas. Low foot traffic areas have many options including mowed fescue and eco lawns, bee lawns, and no mow lawns and prairies.

Planned meadows are also great for low traffic areas. A Kerplantz meadow is any planting that is uniformly 2’ high or shorter. They generally are anchored by one or two grasses to fill space and provide year long structure. The spaces between are fun areas for seasonal flowers, leaf contrasts, and pollinator plants.

    • Slopes

Difficult (and sometimes dangerous!) to maintain, slopes can go from being a homeowner’s worst nightmare to a show piece.

If you have a slope, you know the problems: they often don’t grow grass well, they start to erode, and if you have to mow it can be downright dangerous. Often people think the only option is to “level it out” with a tall modular block wall along the sidewalk. A solution which often isn’t the most attractive and leads to it’s own set of maintenance problems. A mix of rocks (walls or outcrops) and plants are perfect solutions to slope problems. Both rocks and plant material help anchor the soil, minimizing erosion. Planting plans can include anything from shrubs, to mono-swaths of grasses, to meadow mixes that provide both a functional solution and aesthetic appeal to the landscape.

    • Raingardens

What is a raingarden? At the basic level it is an intentional water collection area with plantings and rockwork that make it an asset in the landscape.

Raingardens, channels, and drainage work have a place in every Kerplantz landscape. They not only can solve water issues and save our storm water systems but can be a central feature in the landscape design. A Kerplantz raingarden follows the same principles of any of our plantings.

    • Mini-Forests

Are you looking for a low maintenance, high-impact way to just fill space?

So you don’t want a lawn – what’s the least maintenance thing you can do to just “fill land”? Almost every piece of land in our service area really wants to go back to being woods so the lowest maintenance approach is to intentionally plant a small woods. Kerplantz mini-forests are composed of mixed trees planted fairly densely with shrubs and under plantings to cover the ground.

    Our Planting Principles

Our foundation plantings are based on our 5 characteristics of a sustainable, long-term plant:

    • dense canopy of leaves
    • vigorous – fills its space quickly
    • comes up early in the spring
    • hardy – if you plant 10, it’s likely there will be 10 next year
    • a generalist – works in most garden habitats

    Education in Every Design

Structural, dense plantings fill space and help keep maintenance to a minimum, allowing you to enjoy the process and not feel overwhelmed. Field has also created our own Maintenance Manual to help guide you through the process.

    Our Partners

We work with our nursery partner, Wilson’s Nursery, to custom grow the plants we want in the sizes we want so that we can design knowing we’re building plant communities that work.
